If you're planning a renovation in Amarillo, here's what you need to know about handling the waste the right way.

Unlike regular household trash, construction and renovation debris can't go in your curbside bin. The City of Amarillo's residential trash service doesn't accept construction materials, and hauling it yourself means multiple trips to the landfill — which takes time away from the actual project.

The most efficient solution for most Amarillo homeowners is a dumpster rental. You load it as you demo, and when you're done, we haul it away. Simple.

• Drywall and plaster
• Lumber and wood framing

• Fixtures (sinks, toilets, light fixtures)

Some materials require special handling and cannot go in a standard dumpster:

• Paint and stain — Even dried paint cans in large quantities are restricted. Check with the City of Amarillo for hazardous waste disposal options.
• Appliances with Freon — Refrigerators, freezers, and window AC units contain refrigerant that must be removed by a certified technician before disposal.
• Asbestos-containing materials — Older Amarillo homes (pre-1980) may have asbestos in floor tiles, insulation, or popcorn ceilings. If you suspect asbestos, stop and get it tested before demoing.
• Chemicals and solvents — Adhesives, strippers, and cleaning chemicals are hazardous waste.
• Batteries and electronics

Don't wait until you have a pile of debris to order a dumpster. Schedule it for the first day of demo so you can load as you go. This keeps your work area clear and your project moving.

Put heavy materials — tile, concrete, drywall — on the bottom of the dumpster. Lighter materials like wood and insulation go on top. This helps you maximize space and stay within the weight limit.

Cabinets, doors, and large pieces of lumber take up a lot of space if you toss them in whole. Break them down or cut them to size before loading. You'll fit significantly more in the same dumpster.

Make sure the dumpster is positioned so you can easily load it throughout the project. A dumpster that's hard to reach slows everything down.
