Renting a dumpster makes cleanouts and renovation projects a whole lot easier. But before you start loading, it's important to know what's off-limits. Certain materials are prohibited from dumpsters for safety, environmental, and legal reasons — and putting them in can result in extra fees or disposal problems.

Here's a straightforward guide to what cannot go in a rental dumpster in Amarillo, and what to do with those items instead.

Hazardous materials are the most important category to understand. These items can contaminate soil and groundwater if disposed of improperly.

Not accepted:

• Paint and stain (liquid) — Dried, empty paint cans are generally fine in small quantities, but liquid paint is not.
• Solvents and paint thinner
• Pesticides and herbicides
• Pool chemicals
• Gasoline, motor oil, and other fuels
• Propane tanks (even empty ones)
• Cleaning chemicals and bleach in large quantities

What to do instead: The City of Amarillo periodically hosts household hazardous waste collection events where residents can drop off these materials for free. Check the city's website for upcoming dates.

Refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners, and dehumidifiers contain refrigerant (Freon) that must be removed by a certified technician before the appliance can be disposed of. This is a federal requirement under the Clean Air Act.

Not accepted:

• Refrigerators and freezers
• Window and portable air conditioners
• Dehumidifiers

What to do instead: Many appliance retailers will haul away your old unit when delivering a new one. Scrap metal dealers in Amarillo will also accept appliances after the Freon has been removed.

Tires are a prohibited item in most dumpsters due to landfill restrictions. We can accept up to 4 tires, but large quantities are not permitted.

What to do instead: Most tire shops in Amarillo will accept old tires for a small recycling fee.

Electronics (e-waste) contain heavy metals and other materials that require special recycling.

Not accepted:

• Televisions and monitors
• Computers and laptops
• Printers and copiers
• Batteries (especially lithium-ion)

What to do instead: Many electronics retailers offer recycling programs. Best Buy, for example, accepts a wide range of electronics for recycling.

Needles, syringes, medical waste, and anything contaminated with blood or bodily fluids cannot go in a standard dumpster.

What to do instead: Many pharmacies in Amarillo offer sharps disposal programs. Contact your healthcare provider for guidance on medical waste disposal.

Older homes in Amarillo (generally those built before 1980) may contain asbestos in floor tiles, ceiling tiles, insulation, or pipe wrap. Asbestos is a serious health hazard and requires licensed abatement contractors for removal and disposal.

What to do instead: If you suspect asbestos, stop work immediately and contact a licensed asbestos abatement company. Do not attempt to remove it yourself.

Concrete, brick, dirt, rock, gravel, and railroad ties are not accepted in our dumpsters unless specific arrangements have been made before the dumpster is dropped off. This is a firm policy — no exceptions.

• Concrete and masonry — Broken slabs, blocks, pavers, and concrete chunks.
• Brick — Any quantity, loose or stacked.
• Dirt and soil — Fill dirt, topsoil, clay, or any excavated material.
• Gravel and rock — Landscaping rock, crushed stone, or natural rock.
• Railroad ties — Large, dense, and treated with creosote (a chemical preservative) that requires special handling.

This applies to mixed loads too. Even small amounts of these materials mixed in with other debris are not permitted. A few bricks tossed in with household junk, or a shovel of dirt at the bottom of the dumpster — it's still not allowed. These materials must be kept completely separate from general waste loads.
